It seems Dragon Ball — and fighting game — fans have really been itching for a new Budokai Tenkaichi entry, as Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero’s early access launch has exploded onto the scene, and even besting some of the fighting game genre’s most popular games.
Over on Steam, Sparking Zero has already managed to hit over 91,000 concurrent players (via Steam Charts) already besting that of Tekken 8’s all-time Steam concurrent player high of 46,000, and also that of Street Fighter 6’s Steam all-time high of 70,000. Bear in mind, Sparking Zero’s official launch won’t be until October 11, which means that this number will surely skyrocket.
Bear in mind, that player count number doesn’t even factor in the console players, which would surely add a lot more to it. Speaking of consoles, possibly even more impressive is how Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero has managed to beat Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in terms of becoming the #1 PlayStation Network Store’s most pre-ordered game! Yes, you read that right! A Dragon Ball game managed to topple the gigantic Call of Duty franchise for most pre-orders.
There are no actual sales data made public, and Sony doesn’t tend to release those, so we’re left wondering how many pre-order units Bandai Namco Entertainment have managed to accumulate so far.
The interest and excitement is understandable, as the last entry in the franchise was Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, which was released way back in 2007. It’s taken Bandai Namco 17 years to release a follow up, and the fans are voting with their wallets it seems like.
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero will be released officially this October 11 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will feature 181 playable characters at launch. Expect our review to fly in shortly, as we need more time to give our impressions of the game.
